Yoga: More Than Just Exercise

Yoga has been well documented to show great benefits. There are many benefits to practising yoga including, physical, psychological and biochemical. Many different cultures have embraced yoga as a complete benefit to health. It is an additional holistic approach to complete health care.

As we age, many of us find that we are suffering from chronic back pain. Yoga, and the stretching involved with it, has proved to be a good way to combat that pain. Due to the fact that posture is central to the practice of yoga, it can relieve pain by aligning the body to the correct position. Bad posture almost always equals back pain.

For years magazines, newspapers, television and advertising have told us how important it is to reach and maintain a healthy weight. We know that the speed of our metabolism is the key to how quickly and easily we lose unwanted weight. Practising yoga speeds up our metabolism and helps the body not only to reach the desired weight, but to maintain that weight. Of course proper diet is also an essential component to weight loss, by taking the time to add both healthy eating and yoga to your lifestyle you can maintain your ideal weight.

As well as being beneficial to maintaining an appropriate weight, yoga can help to improve conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. For those suffering from arthritis, yoga helps to make joints more supple, in turn increasing muscle joint mobility. The pain suffered can be relieved with the stretching involved with the regular practice of yoga. Along with joint and muscle health, yoga improves conditions like high blood pressure and also will decrease the amount of bad cholesterol within the blood, at the same time promoting the good cholesterol we all hear about.   

Now that we have seen the benefits to our outer body in terms of physical appearance, and our inner body, in term of muscles, joints and organs, we should also note the benefit to our inner peace and sense of well being. Oftentimes in our busy lifestyle we do not take the time to spend a few hours a week relaxing and getting in touch with ourselves. Practising yoga can not only help us lower stress levels, but can also improve our overall mood. It is important to take care of yourself if your are expected to take care of others. Yoga is a good way to make an overall improvement.

As you can see, yoga is a great way to improve your overall mental and physical health. It has been practised for centuries and used by all different types of people from around the world to improve their health and their lives.
