October 7, 2009 · Filed Under Yoga

Yoga is everywhere these days and maybe you might want to give it a try.  But where do you start and how do you prepare yourself?  Well the first thing to do is assess you health condition and physical capabilities. If you have good health and no injuries, you are off to a good beginning.  The next step is locating somewhere in your area with great Yoga instructors and classes and that offer Yoga for beginners.  Yoga is a science of the body and mind and is something you want to take slowly and explore all that it can do for you.

Beginning yoga is mostly centered around learning the basic breathing techniques and poses.  There are over 100 Yoga poses!By learning which Yoga style you enjoy the most you can advance to a lever that produces the best results. You need to master the basics before you are ready to move on.Popular Yoga styles for beginners are Hatha and Vinyasa.  Hatha Yoga works on strength and stamina while Vinyasa is by its very meaning, breath synchronized movement.

Vinyasa teaches you to inhale or exhale when moving from one pose to another. The Cat Cow Stretch and the Sun Salutation are two of the easier and more common poses for beginners. You should search the Internet or your local newspaper to find classes in your area.  Check out instructor credentials before taking any class.  Most fitness facilities with Yoga for Beginners or Yoga studios themselves, will have Yoga mats for you to use.Use the ones provided with the class until you are sure which you prefer.  Wear comfortable, stretchy pants such as sweat pants or yoga pants that are so popular, even for those who never stepped foot in a studio.Footwear is not as important as you will probably be barefoot.A supportive top is also a good idea.  Secure hair out of your face so that you can maintain poses without hair tickling your face.

Other things to keep in mind when considering Yoga for beginners is to eat lightly a few hours before class, bring water for before or after class, but don’t drink water during class and let your teacher know it is your first class so they can help you if needed. You could also look online or at your local book store for some beginning poses so you will have an idea on what they look like and maybe even try them out.Try to get to class a little early to ensure a good spot towards the front so you will have a good view of whats going on.  Choose a location that feels comfortable to you.Relaxing on your mat is a good way to get comfortable in the room.  After that, let the instructor take you on your first journey!
